This was a timely one for me - I had forgotten about the term intertextuality, which was slightly inconvenient because I've been writing something that discusses intertextuality quite a bit.

Speaking of, I wonder if Sonny Boy also has a relationship with Evangelion? I'm reminded very much of Eva by the character designs, the 'supernatural as a vehicle for psychological drama' aspect, the preoccupation with the sea and with summer, a passive male protagonist with a neglectful parent + combative girl with symbolic connection to cats...

I also came across the dog boy narrative very recently with Shuna's Journey, which is another sort of subversion/retelling of a Tibetan folk tale called 'The Prince Who Turned into a Dog.'

I have seen a few comparisons to Evangelion, though I can’t really talk about their similarities since I’ve only seen a few eps of Eva. I totally see the comparison, and I think it’s likely the show was inspired by Eva to some extent, though I think Sonny Boy has a more narrow focus. From what I’ve gathered, I think Eva delves into a lot of themes that SB only lightly touches on and has a more complex plot.

I’m excited to see what you are writing about! Intertextuality in media is something that I really enjoy.
