Easily the most fully realized shonen manga I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Theres not a single plot beat I would change… Furudate clearly had such a vision for how every character would conclude their growth and it results in the timeskip arc being the single best ending I’ve experienced, it truly is the most perfect bow to tie everything up. Absolutely ecstatic to see that the Haikyuu anime team is seemingly gearing up for more content after The Little Giant movie, cause if we don’t get a timeskip adaption I will riot. Excellent review! I literally just finished re-binge-watching Haikyuu!! It's my absolute favourite and watching it makes me so, so happy... I laughed and cried so much, and its so easy to fall in love with the characters. I really do think it's one of the best stories out there with one of the best anime adaptations...for character, themes, art, music... pretty much everything. I only really realised on my rewatch, now that I have a fair bit of anime under my belt since my first viewing (and a lot of that sports anime too) just HOW good it is. This is a great review and I think you really hit the nail on the head for what makes Haikyuu!! so wonderful.

Alright you convinced me i’ll rewatch the show for the 3rd time. In all seriousness tho Haikyuu is one of a kind and your post captures that! The moment with Tsukishima is one of my favorites as well if only because it captures the whole essence of “oh i get it now”.

Yeah lemme log back into crunchyroll tonight

A Haikyuu rewatch is always a good idea! Tsuki's scene really is one of the best "Oh I get it now" moments

I haven't gotten to watching more than 10 eps of this and I usually like sports anime, but the anime was just meh to me. Maybe I'll give the manga a shot!

I think it's both wish fulfillment and the shonen "power creep" problem. In the average battle shonen, authors need to keep introducing stronger foes to maintain tension and hype, and it gets harder to write around a character that is at a disadvantage. Volleyball being a real life sport where you can get better via training means the author doesn't have to rely on cheap tricks like giving Hinata a hack ability.

With FMA, I think it's complicated to judge where to draw the line between "Arakawa did this because she's part of a sexist environment and accidentally perpetuated that sexism" and "Arakawa is writing for boys so she may think she has to include those tropes". I think it's a mix of both.
